New comers Akwa United of Uyo are champions of the 2015 Federation Cup for the first time in their history.
The Akwa Ibom State club defeated Lobi Stars of Makurdi 2-1 in the final match played on Sunday at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.
Set piece specialist Nomso Edo broke the deadlock in the 36th minute with a spectacular free kick after Friday Ubong was brought down just by the Lobi Stars 18-yard box.
Abdullafeez Afeez doubled the lead in second half and ended the long wait by the Promise Keepers as they secured their first Federation Cup title.
Makurdi based Lobi stars, were cup winners in 2003, but they chased the game in the second half and got a consolation goal when substitute Barnabas Imengar Junior pulled a goal back for Lobi in stoppage time from a brilliant free kick.
Sunshine Queens won the Women’s version of the Federation Cup after they defeated Bayelsa Queens 3-1 on penalties after full time scores stood at 1-1.
Akwa United who barely escaped relegation will indeed be proud to end their season on a high with the Federation Cup and will now compete in the CAF Confederation Cup next season.
